Frequently asked questions
What are USMS Motivational Times?
USMS Motivational Times are voluntary performance standards published annually by U.S. Masters Swimming. They are organized into six tiers — B, BB, A, AA, AAA, and AAAA — computed by adding a fixed percentage to each event’s National Qualifying Time (NQT). Each event has separate cutoffs for women and men, broken down by age group, in short course yards (SCY) and long course meters (LCM).
What is the difference between SCY and LCM?
SCY (short course yards) refers to races in a 25-yard pool, the most common format in U.S. Masters competition. LCM (long course meters) refers to races in a 50-meter Olympic-style pool. USMS publishes separate Motivational Times for each course because times are not directly comparable between the two.
How often are USMS Motivational Times updated?
USMS publishes new Motivational Times each calendar year. The standards on this page reflect the 2026 USMS Motivational Times.
How are these different from Percentile-based Motivational Times?
Traditional USMS Motivational Times add a fixed percentage to the NQT to compute each tier. USMS Percentile-based Motivational Times instead define each tier by where a swimmer ranks within their age group — for example, AAAA represents the top 2% of swimmers in that event and age group. Both standards are available on Open Lane.
